Mini Pig Care

Purchasing a mini pig is exciting; however, there are some things to keep in mind.

  • The life expectancy of a mini pig can be up to 15 years.  Many things can happen in 15 years (marriage, a baby, a move, etc.) therefore you need to be sure you can commit to a mini pig.

  • They are extremely smart. They rank 4th in intelligence right below elephants, chimpanzees, and dolphins.

  • Mini pigs don't sweat. This is the reason you see pigs covered in mud. The mud acts as a cooling agent.  A pool of water is a nice clean alternative to keep them cool if they are to stay outside.

  • Mini pigs do not need to be fat.  They need a diet of pellet grain, veggies, and fruits.  It is important to watch the portion size of the feeding to keep them at their ideal weight.

  • Mini pigs need exercise. Just like us, they need to move around.  If you have a secure fenced-in area let them out to play.  Or if you prefer to harness train them, take them out for a walk around the neighborhood.

  • Mini pigs do get bored.  Have toys available for them that can be changed out weekly.  Rooting mats are a good idea to put pellet food in so they have to hunt for their food.
